During my project ‘Het IZH’, I made the D10 dispenser float, a measuring instrument intended to raise the Netherlands with grains of sand: an instrument to do something good for the world. For my bomb series, I combined the shape of this float with the shape of a bomb, something that does precisely nothing good for the world.
I often wonder why we are able to come up with such destructive objects, and find it fascinating that these things we design also continue to exist. We seem to be unable to get rid of bombs. In two works, I process my feelings about this from a childlike perspective on the way in which major powers threaten with and seem to ‘play’ with bombs.
The works, ‘Hoge bommen vangen veel wind’ and ‘De bom valt niet ver van de boom’, are inspired by demonstration models of toys that I saw as a kid at Intertoys. I had been carrying this idea around with me for some time, but every new war made it more sensitive. Maybe that is precisely the reason to make it.
